This one you can see right here between Jay and I, there's a big thing. There's a big. Exclamation point, and it says spoiler alert. So this is our spoiler discussion. So this is for people that don't care about spoilers or anyone who's already seen the movie that wants to hear more about it in a spoiler -tastic fashion for Thunderbolts. Again, Jay and I saw a kind of day zero advanced fan screening today for Thunderbolts. We both enjoyed the movie. Let's start with the obvious thing, the asterisk, right? We put the asterisk in the title. Right. So first off. Were you surprised by the explanation of the asterisk? I was. I'm not going to I'm not going to lie. I was like, what's up with the Asterix? Is it like because the name was already taken like another movie was called the Thunderbolts? Is it like I did not understand the meaning behind this? I did not. And then they explain it. At the very end and they're the New Avengers literally the New Avengers New Avengers with a Z So let's let's talk about New Avengers really quick. So New Avengers is actually a comic book, right? The

1:33 first like crew of which is like spider -man Wolverine Spider -woman and Luke Cage so not the people who see this movie, but New Avengers is a thing and that's the asterisk the whole time by the way, the joke is In the comics, the Thunderbolts are formed by Thunderbolt Ross, who obviously is Red Hulk and is now in prison after the events of Brave New World. But in this case, it's Yelena's childhood soccer team. That's where the name came from. He's like, we are the Thunderbolt. And they're like sponsored by shades. And then they get to argue about who sponsored her soccer team as a child. Which was a little running gag they had um So so there's the asterisk they at the end of the movie they are announced as the new avengers So obviously Marvel trying to pull one over on all of us by calling it thunderbolts asterisk When it's there's a new avengers Yeah, you're shaking your head like you don't like this or or what? I did. I actually really liked it because like it was surprising and you know, I I like being surprised. You know, I on unlike you, I didn't really know what to expect from from the Thunderbolt. So I was like everything

3:05 was a surprise to me. I did not figure out the plot of the movie. And honestly, like the person I thought was going to die, I thought. Oh, yeah. Who did you think was going to die? We mentioned this in the non -spoiler review. David Harbor. You thought Red Guardian was going to die? Yes, because because he was the guy that was like you said, he was trying to bring everyone together. He was the heart of the team. And I thought we were going to go with like Agent Colson here. We're like, oh, OK. Oh, like they can't get along. They're fighting. Something happened. He dies.

3:46 And then they band together. And that didn't happen. No, I'm happy about. Yeah. The only death we get, we get we get Taskmaster really early in the film. Taskmaster shows up and got done. Boom. Over right in the head. Like, OK. Right. Because they get Valentina sends them all to kill each other. Right. and then incinerate the evidence. Like, all right, you all kill each other and then whoever's left, I'll just burn them alive. It'll be fine. But it doesn't work out that way because of Bob. Right. Bob is Sentry. Right. And in the comics, Sentry and Void are two halves of the same coin. Sentry is Superman.

4:31 Right. In the comic books. And here he is very much Superman. That was that was definitely the vibe you got when he was fighting the Thunderbolts in that moment. Yeah. Yeah, 100 percent like they the little like the research that they discover on him. They said something like, oh, like he has the power of ten thousand sons or something like immediately. I was just like, oh, shit, is this like Superman? Yeah, he's he's Superman, except he's got the other side of him, which is the void, which is psychotic and creates little shadow things on the ground and like mercs people that was a cool visual when he starts shadowing people on the ground I was like damn I I'm not gonna lie like that scene um when like they're all like helping each other save like the civilians and then um there's the little girl that just gets yeah David Harbour saves the little girl Oh, my God. I was like, oh, I was like, she's dead. Oh, my God. And they started that one.

5:41 That was kind of the first one out the gate beyond the soldier guys. You were like, oh, OK, like. Yeah, we're just merkin fools. Right out the gate. OK, void. Try to think what else we want to talk about cutting here in our spoiler review. It's it's again, I'm going to go watch it again this weekend. I'll probably take my daughter to it. The pacing, it felt like it kind of, it kind of got a slow start. I was like, what are you doing? Where are we going? I like that she stole the guinea pig. Like she goes in to blow the lab up at the beginning and she finds this guinea pig and she's talking to the guard that she's tied up. And then she fights the scientist and like telegraphs the fight. She talks, she narrates what's going to happen until he accidentally shoots himself in the head. Yeah, that was like, oh, that one's supposed to happen. And she's like, I needed that face. Yep. But before she blows up the lab, she steals the guinea pig and is just walking down the road with the guinea pig. I was like, oh. And then we see the guinea pig in credits with the I don't know, the AI art or whatever. The guinea pig is on the front of the George Washington vote. Yes, I like the guinea pig. Yeah, I mean ultimately I said I clocked at the beginning I was like, okay You learn is going through all this stuff and then what the the reason I clocked it is the second he started touching people Right. He does it to you Elena first. He touches you later. She goes back into like Some weird alt universe where she's seeing her a horrible thing from her past

7:13 then he does it to walk her right which I mentioned this as we were waiting for the end credits. Please, guys, start using his name. He's U .S. agent. Okay. He's U .S. agent. Okay. Let's stop. Yes, it was funny. We had the jokes about dime store and junior university, Captain America. Right. He's U .S. agent. That's his stupid name. Right. In the comic books. Okay. He's U .S. agent. Anyway. Yeah. when he when he starts touching them and they go into their little void space and like relive that horrible thing and that he does the same thing to walker right while they're still in the vault i was like oh so what's going to happen is they're going to go into the void space at the end and they're going to find good bob and they're going to talk and everything they're going to work out their demons and everybody's going to work it out And it was it was when we got the walker one the Elena one I wasn't sure what once they needed to walker. I was like, oh, okay This is where rap and so the whole movie.

8:20 I was like Okay, we're gonna get to the point where they're all going into the void Which was the only downside to me for the movie I was like I know what's happening That that's so that is like the the I don't know the bad dark side of reading all the comics. And it's hard. It's hard to read all the comics. But yeah, I I'm not gonna lie. Like there's there's moments when like new movies like this come out. I'm like, oh, Thunderbolts.

9:01 Like should I look at like a like a paperback and like try to like read up on the Thunderbolts? And I'm like, stop. No, don't do it. Don't do it. Just be surprised. So I like that. And I will say that. That's what I'm happy. I managed to because apparently the asterisk thing leaked a couple of days ago and I know. Yeah, I missed it. I was like, no, and I'm not going to look because I want to be surprised because Kevin Feige had said that the asterisk was on the Thunderbolts title for a reason. And I was like, that's interesting. And Feige is very deliberate. So I was like, it's going to be what's going to be. And then we get. Our reasoning they're the new Avengers Our other post credit we had at the end of the Marvels was we get we get miss Marvel and Kate Bishop So maybe we're gonna have new Avengers and young Avengers all coming together for Avengers doomsday Was there anything before we get to the post credit scenes anything else like within the film? Spoilery wise that you want to chat about I mean, let's let's talk about the struggle with depression theme. I liked that That was, um, it was really cool because they did it in a manner to me that wasn't like cheesy and it wasn't like, Oh, this is lame. Like it was like these guys have a dark past and you can't shove that down. It's going to come back. It's going to boil over. Um, and if it does and you can't

10:33 control it, you're going to fucking start voiding people out, you know, like, and it's it was. And there's some there's some like dark scenes of like child murder. Yeah, childhood murder abuse. It's yeah. His parents like abuse. Well, and like when they're whipping the girls in the red room after they fail, the gun putting together a competition like. Yeah. They do not shy away from dark themes in this movie. And I liked it. I like that. Yeah. I thought it was a good move. Yeah, I thought it was good writing. All credit to Florence Pugh, man. She played it well. She really did like you bought it the whole time.

11:20 And I think that same dialogue, that same story with a lesser actress. I mean, and there's a reason she's in Chris Nolan's films. There's a reason she's done the movies that she's done outside of the MCU. She's a very talented actress. Yeah. And I think that she I think a lesser actress could have made that cheesy and not land the same way. Yeah, I agree. Again, and I'm going to go back to David Harbour again, from the very beginning of the movie, when she comes to see him and he's brushing his teeth with dish soap. Right. the whole time he's trying to be like he's he is unrelenting in his love for her and his belief in her the whole movie and it's not a put it's not a put on job right like you do you do not ever get the sense that he is anything but sincere in he's saying Yelena I know you did this stuff it wasn't your fault you were a child And I love you, and I'm here to support you. The whole time, like he, and I think again, I think David Harbour sells it well. He plays it well. And even when she's rejecting him, he's just like, you know what, it's fine. I'm gonna come back with the same message again. That I love you, you're a good person, you can be a

12:52 hero. And I believe in you like the whole time. And I think and I think that ties back to the mental health talk of, you know, people with like depression, they need to hear these things. They need to hear like, hey, like that's that's not who you are. Like you're a good person. And there was actually one subtle thing that I liked really, really much. So with Bob. Yeah. When we go into Bob's past, there is I can't remember the exact phrase. Oh, yeah. So you want to be a hero or like something like that or like you'll ever be a hero or something. His dad says it to him. Yeah. When he's trying to protect his mom. Yeah. And the void tells Bob. And that is like a huge that's self -talk. That's a negative self -talk. So like. When you're, when you grow up and your parents say horrible shit to you, then when you get older, you don't realize it.

13:57 You think it's your like own inner dialogue talking to you, but it's actually the voice of your abuser, your, your dad or whatever. Um, and I was like, Oh shit. I was like, damn, this is like some deep, like therapy shit. I didn't like a Marvel movie. I was like, Oh God, very much. Yeah. Yeah. And it's and here's the thing. It's it's it's Red Guardian showing that unconditional love for Yelena and him saying you can be more. And that's what she goes into the void to tell Bob you can be more. Right. I'm here. Like the way that Red Guardian's like, I'm here for you. I will do what you need to make you better. She pays that forward to Bob. to save it and then eventually it's everybody and then and then we get the group hug. That was the only thing that surprised me was that it was like at the end it was like all of us are gonna we're here for you Bob right and I thought that was I thought that that paying for mention that thing where she was like you know you're better and she figures out that was the part that surprised me. I knew she was going to go to the void. I knew it was going to be that what it got me was he's beating the crap out of the void in there inside the fake world. right? The void world and he's beating the **** out of the void. No, you're not. I'm not going to let you down talk me anymore. Bad voice self talk and she it clicks. She's like, no, that's what he wants. He wants you to let

15:30 in that violence. He wants you to let in that anger. Yeah. At the self talk and that to me is that that mirror to self harm. Yeah. Yeah. Right? which is what he's doing. He's he's cutting or impeding self -harm in that moment. And she figures it out. She's like, oh, no, this is what the void wants. Stop it. Don't finish beating it up. You can't shut it down. It's a part of you. So deep that. Yeah. You know what? I'm liking the movie more. Again, remember I said when we left, I was like, I gotta percolate on it. I gotta like, the more we discuss it, I'm like, you know what? Yeah. Yeah. And if you haven't seen the movie yet, which why are you watching this video? But like, um, it's dark and it has these themes, but then it, they have funny, like lightness. I was like busting out laughing like that scene. with the limo where he comes rolling up in the limo and he's like, he lied up. She's so embarrassed. She's right. She's like, no, don't don't. She's the embarrassed kid whose parents are picking her up from school. She's like, no, why are you here? Yeah. I like I again.

16:56 And yeah, there's those lighthearted moments. Yeah. Right. He's like, we could be on the with his box. Right. Oh I love that and then the post credit he's standing in the thing be like at me on the Wheaties box be on the with his box Wheaties is good for children Good cereal. I like that post credit. So that's the silly post credit is The Wheaties box he he like he's trying to pick up on some woman by showing that he's on the Wheaties box as the new Avenger guy Now the second post credit scene, let's shout about that There's a couple things they drop one. There's a 14 month time gap Yep, right So my current running theory is They're giving time for daredevil born again season 2 to happen Right because that's coming too right and I think they're also giving time for spider -man to happen Okay. So, those are the two that I'm like, Feige is like, we need a, we need a time jump here, right? So, we got a 14 months later. They're the new Avengers but they're apparently in an argument with Sam about who's the actual Avengers and maybe Sam's put together another team. Yeah. And he trademarked it like a like a dick. And then, he's like, we'll be the Avengers Z, right? And this is where you

18:30 think it's a silly thing. Now, this is again, two things. Again, this is where I feel like it's a step backwards at the end of Falcon and Winter Soldier and again in brave new world Sam and Bucky ain't got no beef right At the end of doctor winter soldier Sam and Bucky are good in brave new world it's Bucky who comes to see Sam in a hospital and Say it's okay, and they have that great scene. It's one of the best scenes in brave new world is one with Sam and Bucky Where Bucky's like yeah? Look, this is going to have to do. It's a great scene. And then at the end credits are like, well, did you talk to Sam? And he's like, yeah, it didn't go well. And I'm like, the fuck happened? Like. So unless there's another movie within that 14 months that has a lot of backstory. There's not, though.

19:24 But like the only the only thing I can think of is Sam is pissed. Because, like, how dare you take these criminals. Nutsos and make them the Avengers. Like you have JV. Captain America, like that's you should not be allowed. Like you're disgracing my friend Captain America. I think you can let Yelena in. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. And ghosts didn't do anything wrong. Not really. Yeah. I get I get US agent. I get JV Captain America, but not Bucky. Bucky's fine. Elaine is fine.

20:09 Right. Yeah. So again, this is where I get confused. Now, moving on at the end of that end credits scene, they're like, there's a ship coming in. It's an extra dimensional ship entering the thing. And they're like, bring up a satellite. And it is at somebody. I saw somebody post this. Do not read the credits. If you don't want to be spoiled about the end scene before you get there, because in the credits, they say the Fantastic Four theme. And I was like, I didn't hear the Fantastic Four theme during the movie. Right. And then we get to the end credits and that extra special ship comes in. And it's very obviously that design you've seen in the trailers, that retro 60s rocket. And then it spins and we get a big four. Yep. So. Uh yeah. Something's going to happen this summer at Fantastic Four where they're going to leave and come to the 616. Yeah.

21:02 Um and we also learned something else very important in that post credit scene. Remind me. Uh Bob can do the dishes. Bob can't do the dishes. Bob is still there but he's not using his powers because he's afraid of the void. Which is very valid like Fair enough. He's like, they're both there. Like, I got to be careful. Yeah. I think it's going to be interesting going into doomsday. Yeah, this is a good setup for Fantastic Four. It's a good setup. We got a new Avengers team now in Avengers doomsday that can assemble with Sam's Avengers and you'd be fine. Yeah. Try to think if there's anything else we want to talk about during the spoiler review. Yeah. I don't know. What was your favorite funny moment? That wasn't in the trailers. That wasn't in the trailers.

22:10 Trying to think what my favorite funny moment was. I think I think. Oh, me. Go ahead. No, go ahead. All right. I think for me, when when they're going through the different worlds and then all of a sudden they start getting the shit beat out of them by the guy in the chicken costume. Oh, yeah. I was on math. I was on. That that to me was hilarious because it came out of nowhere. So I don't know, it's just. That was funny. Yeah. What about Bob? If that chicken hits me one more time. Gosh. I think I one of them I think of is that they come busting in with the truck and they get into the big fight scene in the truck.

23:11 And then she's like, I just had that drywall replaced. The doors open. Like y 'all can just come upstairs and they're like, oh Okay, and this is like and then like he walks by and head butts the dude on his way through and then they just go upstairs like mmm Yep, like that entire fight was totally unnecessary. Yep We fought them because we thought we had to but we didn't you know There are some great moments. I hope we see more of Wendell Pierce Congress guy. I love what appears as an actor right I Did like at the end when she went when Valentina tries to turn around she's like look what I did the new Avengers and I was like Oh somebody better do something the thing that redeemed that scene for me as I was about to be pissed again Because they were like we're gonna beat the crap out of her We're going to break her bones. I was like, thank God she's finally going to get her come up. And then you go through and there's the press and she's like, these are the new Avengers.

24:21 And then you later goes over and it's like, we own you now. I so thought she was going to punch her in the face in front of that was even better because she was like, now you have not because you turned us into the heroes. Yeah. So you're screwed. Right and I loved that line from Yelena like we own you now. It's like yes Yeah, it was good. If you're not gonna kill her at least make her useful.
