No Spoilers, but how GOOD was Fantastic Four： First Steps!

0:00 Hello everyone so Jay and I just got back from a lovely Thursday night screening of Fantastic four first steps the newest MCU thingy and we got much like we did with the Thunderbolts Early screening. We got these cool key chains Okay, let's kind of go bottom Bottom line up front, Jay, what did you think of this film Superman? You called the best comic book movie since Endgame. Did Fantastic Four beat it? No. No, but. But it is the best Fantastic Four movie period. Now, that's not a very high bar to clear in the history of Fantastic Four Phelps. Where do you rate this?

0:56 Like, like if you go into MCU, like A tier, B tier, C tier, D tier after like, where do you put this in the in the grand scheme of MCU films? I would say like. Hmm. I would say this is like a solid B. Like a solid B level like like not not bad. It's good. And by the way, y 'all got to get off this like if it's not perfect, it's it's bad. No, it's a it's a good movie. It is a good movie. Let's kind of run through it here. Obviously, we know we got this kind of retro futuristic vibe to the whole thing. We did see it in IMAX, which I'm glad we did. Visually, I thought it was stunning. It looked good. Start to finish. And honestly, the one I was worried about was Reed's powers, right? Like, because it's hard to do Reed's powers well and make them not look completely ridiculous. But I think they did a pretty good job of that. Yeah. Everything looked great. This looked how a Marvel movie should look. The effects were great. I didn't have any problems with like any of the superpowers.

2:18 Everything looked. On par, like everything looked great. Casting. Pretty solid. Yeah, very solid. Good chemistry. That's the thing that I think I bought the most of. Right. Like Sue seemed like Johnny's older sister. Yes, 100 percent. Right. There was a little bit of love. a little bit of frustration, right? You know, and Johnny being the little brother. And I actually want to stick on Johnny because we talked about this a little bit as we left the theater. Hang on, I'm blurring out here. This is the best version of Johnny I've ever seen. I loved this Johnny.

3:02 I thought he I thought Paul Quinn did such a great job as this Johnny. I 100 % agree. No, no issues there. I think he was perfect. Obviously, he's funny. And then yeah, he has that like little brother thing going on. And I'm sorry, it's Joseph Quinn. And so here's the thing that I want to say about this without getting into spoilers. And we are going to do a spoiler video. So if you've already seen it, or if you don't care about spoilers, go ahead and go back and watch our spoiler reaction, which will be a lot more in depth and we'll go into full spoilers about the thing. But I do want to say this. There's this tendency with Johnny and this is what I liked about this movie that they didn't do this There's this tendency with Johnny to make him very one note, right? Johnny's the goofy hot shot guy But Johnny actually has a very important role in the story That has nothing to do with his ability to turn into fire Right he does something that critically turns the story in a really important way. And I was surprised that they did that, right? Because again, the temptation is to make Johnny very one note. And I really want to say what it is, but again, I'm not going to go into spoilers here. 4:32 just crushed it. Eben Mosbacherak as the thing. He emoted so well. Yeah. I just like I bought it. I bought him as the thing. Yep. And again, he wasn't one note either. I think maybe maybe that's the thing I noticed the most about the characters is previous Fantastic Four's all the characters felt very one note. Reed is really smart. Sue is this Johnny's a hot shot goofball. You know, Ben's a clobbering guy. Right. Like.

5:14 I didn't get that sense from any of these characters. No, there was definitely some pretty good depth with all of them. They all have, I would say, like their. Character flaw that they're trying to like kind of overcome during the movie. They're trying to like prove themselves in a very specific way or trying to overcome their I don't know fame if you will Yeah, I I really like there was a lot there was a lot of depth to This fantastic for which the other two. I mean, I I fell asleep the the last one I fell asleep during fan for stick. Yeah The only casting and I told you this on my way out. I don't think it's bad But if there was a weak link in the chain, I really do think it's Pedro Pascal I I don't know. I don't I Don't think so. I I really enjoyed him.

6:22 I liked him. I just Maybe I'm just a little Pedro Pascal and I love Pedro Pascal Okay, and I appreciate Latino guys who grow patchy beards. Thank you Pedro like it it helps all of us okay but he was the one i maybe i'll have to watch it again and maybe on a second watch through i'll feel differently but he to me was uh the the way it's like um galactus looked amazing yeah galactus i god that um Yeah, very comic booky, but not.

7:06 Didn't look ridiculous. Yeah, he did. He looked like he belonged in this reality. Yeah, it was sick. I liked it. He has. It's amazing. Yeah. I want to go back to the glass. Ralph Anderson is Galactus. He even had the goofy helmet. Which under normal circumstances, you'd be like, why do you wear that stupid hat? But you know what? It almost makes sense in this movie. Like it didn't pull me out of the movie at all. Yeah. Julia Garner, as our silver surfer, shall a ball. Right. She did a really great job. Yep. Right.

7:49 Yeah, I'm really trying to think of anybody that I didn't love in this that I didn't like. And again. Reed is probably the closest. I loved Herbie. The little robot is great. He's awesome. Right. You know. Yes, there's just there's so much to say that was just, again, really well done. Also didn't resolve the way that I that that I thought it was going to. But again, you don't. You don't feel like they won too easily, nor do you feel like it was too hard? Like they balanced it really well. Yeah. The stakes made sense. It did. And I don't think I can say anything else without spoiling, so like, um. Yeah. Yeah.

8:53 I mean. It was it was a it was a tough fight. Yeah. Yeah. But again, it all made sense. There was nothing there where I was like, what? How did that happen? Right. Right. There was nothing in the fight where I was like, really? Right. And again, you felt that menace from Galactus, you felt that menace from the surfer. I think she was used really well in the parts where they used her. um it's kind of like the the tier two antagonist here uh which again we've all seen the thing on tiktok all right i herald is beginning i herald your end um don't worry i know a lot of people i was talking to were worried that they were getting too spoiled by all the clips and shit that disney's been releasing on this most of that's in the first 20 minutes of the movie Right, there's a whole middle section there and and like but the middle section which visually again if you've read the Jack Kirby comics it feels so Like again, there's a whole middle section that just looks amazing. We saw it in IMAX I'm glad we saw it in IMAX because there's some cool visuals Trying to think what else we could say without spoiling too much I really don't know.

10:16 It's it's so hard. So, yeah, Jay, overall, let's let's run this down again really quick. Is this a you should see this in theaters or wait for streaming? 100 % should see in theaters. The only thing that really upset me, you they were already sold out of the Galactus head buckets. So if you want one, they're gone. They're already gone. Now, I'm going to say this. We saw this early screening at AMC. We got our cool keychain like we did for Thunderbolts for our early screening. And unlike the real where we had to see Superman, we got to do our own butter on our popcorn and their popcorn popcorns. Just better. I'm sorry. Sorry, Regal. You're not going to let that go.

10:57 Oh, yeah. No, I'm not. But yes, they were sold out. They did have the Herbie drink holders. And I almost want to put there. They're a little pricey. I think those things don't just a smidge. Yeah. It's it was a little expensive drink holder. Eighty two. Holy crap for Herbie. It was 80. Yeah. So, again, I didn't do it. Anyway, folks, are you planning on seeing Fantastic Four? Are you excited about this movie? We really like it. I think it's it's I think it's actually almost fair to say the MCU is back now. You know, three of the last four movies they've released between Deadpool and Wolverine Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four are great. Captain America is really kind of the only misstep movie wise I've seen in the last couple of years. So I think it's fair to say the MCU is back. Yeah.
