🎲 Why Does Everything Have to Be a Tabletop Game Now?

🎲 Why Does Everything Have to Be a Tabletop Game Now?

Podcast Episode Recap – Error Code Show

In this week’s episode, we ask the question absolutely nobody else is brave enough to:
Does every IP really need a tabletop RPG?

We dive into the recent announcements (and rumors) surrounding the explosion of licensed tabletop games, including:

  • Attack on Titan: The Tabletop RPG – Confirmed at Gen Con, Polygon-backed, and likely coming to wreck your session notes with Titan-sized drama.

  • Marvel Rivals – A tabletop RPG expected to launch in March 2026, because apparently assembling the Avengers wasn't enough—we need dice rolls too.

  • Diablo TTRPG – Supposedly hitting Kickstarter this fall. Spoiler: The minis look amazing. Do we need it? Not sure. Will we back it? Probably.

And the real question:
Why does every franchise now need a tabletop version?

From Lord of the Rings to Blade Runner to The Walking Dead, licensed IPs are flooding the tabletop space—and some of them are actually pretty damn good (we’re looking at you, Free League Publishing). But it begs the question: are these passion projects or just cash grabs?

We get into all of it:

  • The pros and cons of licensed tabletop games

  • Why playing inside someone else’s IP can feel creatively limiting

  • Which IPs we’d actually want to see in RPG form (hint: there was a lot of love for Neon Genesis Evangelion and TMNT)

  • And yes, Octokitty’s tragic origin story makes a surprise appearance...

We even briefly touch on the RDJ vs Ryan Reynolds rumor mill and how fast fans are ready to throw Deadpool under the (hilariously sarcastic) bus.

đź’¬ Final Thoughts

We love tabletop RPGs, but maybe it’s time we asked:
Are we getting too much of a good thing?

Let us know what IP you think deserves a tabletop adaptation—or which one was a step too far. (Looking at you, Monopoly: Fortnite Edition.)
